What is research data services consulting?
Do you need help organizing, storing, and developing policies for the data you generate during grant-funded research? Do you need to deposit the appropriate data at a repository at the end of a grant cycle, while safely disposing of data that should not be retained? I help people and organizations in academic research to manage and safeguard research data in alignment with worldwide standards and best practices. I have experience in data cleaning/data wrangling, exploratory data analysis, data organization, and strategic planning for research data and research computing services. I’m happy to take on one-time projects, work on a periodic or retainer-based model, or train your researchers and students in best practices.
How I can help:
Sponsored research or research development offices
I assist researchers with writing appropriate data management plans (DMPs) for their grants with major US funding agencies (NSF, NIH, NASA, DOE, DOD, foundations, corporate funders, etc), as well as with setting up local implementation of DMPtool to streamline assistance with DMPs across your institution. I can help you develop your relationships with other stakeholders in your institutions, such as research groups, schools, and Library/IT organizations, and develop strategic plans and program roadmaps for data management that comply with agency requirements and federal regulations. If you have researchers asking questions about cloud computing access, research computing services and infrastructure, or data science skills training for their teams, I can help you plan for success in both the short and the longer term.
Research groups, schools, library and IT units in universities
Are you writing data management plans, depositing data, and writing reports at the end of your grant cycles? Got researchers to train in data skills and practices? Writing a grant for new scientific instrumentation or a new center? I provide experienced, comprehensive assistance with these projects, so you can plan for the future with confidence. I have experience writing and consulting on grants and projects across STEM fields with a variety of funding sources, and advising on data protection concerns and schemas such as PII and HIPAA, CUI and other programs for controlled or sensitive data, and restrictions or embargoes for intellectual property and technology transfer purposes.
Smaller institutions welcome!
Not at an R1 or R2 institution and having trouble finding right-sized advice for your research programs? Let’s talk about it. My background is in developing data services at small liberal-arts colleges, and I listen closely to both what colleagues at the largest research institutions are doing, and what needs are at smaller institutions. Do you need to establish some of the data services as described above, at your smaller institution? I can help.
